Special Education Services During School Closure - Letter to Parents
4/22/2020 - Important School Closure Update
I hope this communication finds you safe and healthy.
This message is specifically for students receiving special education services.
As you are aware, we have moved to our second phase of remote learning. With guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) - Office for Special Education, you will be receiving a Remote Service Plan based on your childs IEP. This plan outlines the IEP services, which are modified based on the school closure, that will be provided and how they will be provided. You should receive the plan some time this week. The plans will be sent via email. If we do not have consent to send documents electronically, the document will be password protected and you will receive a seperate email with the password.
DESE has advised that specific consent is not required to begin the provision of these modified services.
We continue to receive information from the federal and state departments of education weekly and we may change the way we are supporting your child based on the guidance we receive. We will notify you if we change the way we are delivering support.
You should have aready received a communication from your child's special education teacher or related service provider to discuss the new schedule and service delivery.
I am also attaching a letter and resource toolkit from the DESE Senior Associate Commissioner for Special Education, Russell Johnston that outlines what you can expect regarding special education services and section 504 accommodations.
I will also post this information and additional resources on the website.
