Monomoy Middle School students celebrate community heroes
Monomoy Regional Middle School sixth-graders have just completed their annual interdisciplinary unit on The Finest Hours, which is the story of the 1952 Coast Guard rescue of the crewmen trapped on the tanker SS Pendleton off the coast of Chatham. During this unit, students read and discussed the book, visited historical sites and memorabilia from the rescue, and interviewed local community heroes about their own experiences. On Wednesday, February 5, 2020, they wrapped up the unit by watching a screening of The Finest Hours film at the Chatham Orpheum. Casey Sherman, author of The Finest Hours, made an appearance to speak to the students about his work. They then enjoyed a luncheon at Chatham Bars Inn with the local community heroes. Students were able to share projects they had completed based on their interviews with firefighters, police officers, state troopers, and Coast Guard officers.
Many thanks to the Atwood House Museum for welcoming the students to see its CG-36500 exhibits, to the Chatham Orpheum for hosting the screening for the students, to CBI for donating space and staff to support the luncheon, and to the parent and community volunteers who provided assistance. In addition, special thanks to the following restaurants for donating food for the luncheon: Chatham Perk, Chatham Squire, Chatham Village Bakery, JoMama’s, Mom & Pop’s, Pain D’Avignon, and The Talkative Pig.
