Monomoy civics students win awards at Project Citizen showcase
Monomoy Regional High School sent four teams of 8th-grade students to compete at the Project Citizen state showcase on May 31, 2019. The projects were completed as part of the 8th grade civics curriculum. Each of the eight civics classes at MRHS completed a project and presented it before judges and peers in school during the week of May 13-17. Two groups each from the Blue and Silver teams were chosen to participate in the state showcase in Boston. At the state showcase, all four teams won awards. Silver E-block's presentation on Shark Safety (advocating for detection buoys and trauma training) won the Environmental Project award. Blue G-block's presentation on Banning Plastic Straws (which successfully argued for articles at both Chatham and Harwich town meetings) won the Best Hearing Award. Silver B-block's presentation on Plastic Ocean Pollution (which worked with Blue G-block on the Plastic Straw Ban) won the Best Portfolio Award. And Blue E-block's presentation on #EscapeTheVape (pursuing limits on flavored tobacco product sales before the Harwich and Chatham Boards of Health) won the Humanitarian Project Award and the Best Overall Presentation Award. Congratulations to all the students and to teachers Andrew Matheson and John Dickson, whose Civics classes completed Project Citizen this year.
