Chatham Elementary School students revel in Poetry in Motion
Each month, students and staff at Chatham Elementary School come together to celebrate their collective successes, efforts, and community spirit, as part of the school’s PBIS program (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). These celebrations are called Proud To Be A Shark events, and the activities range from student performances to special guests.
To honor National Poetry Month, the April Proud To Be A Shark celebration at CES featured David Zucker of Poetry in Motion. Zucker’s performances incorporate acting, mime, vocal gymnastics, humor, audience participation, and a trunk full of costumes, puppets, and props, as he recites poems by A.A. Milne, Lewis Carroll, Langston Hughes, Shel Silverstein, Edgar Allen Poe, and James Whitcomb Riley.
This event was funded by the Chatham Elementary School PTO. Chatham PTO member Kendra Whitney obtained two grants, from the Art of Charity and the Chatham Cultural Council, to allow CES students to experience Poetry in Motion, as well as two other cultural events this year.
