A commitment to belonging and inclusivity
Dear Monomoy Parents, Staff, and Community,
As you may have seen, on August 31, 2023, the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office issued a statement that a white juvenile was indicted on racially motivated attempted murder charges from an incident in Chatham in July. As the two alleged aggressors in this incident are juveniles, their identities have not been released, and we are unable to comment on specifics, except to confirm that they are not enrolled in our district. Any specific questions about the incident should be directed to the Office of the District Attorney.
The alleged actions are incredibly concerning and stand in stark contrast to the values we hold as a school district and as a community. Monomoy continually strives to be welcoming, safe, and inclusive for all. We believe in celebrating diversity, promoting empathy, respecting the dignity of every human being, and fostering understanding among all students, staff, and families. Acts of hatred and violence are unacceptable, and we condemn any behavior that seeks to harm or marginalize others based on their race, ethnicity, or any other personal attribute.
Monomoy Regional School District has been working closely with the Chatham Police Department and our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council to ensure that our schools and our community are prepared to support anyone impacted by this incident or by news of any indictment.
We have put into place a number of supports at our schools to offer all students and staff an opportunity to talk to someone, share concerns, and feel safe. We would also encourage parents and caregivers to have conversations with their children about the importance of respect, empathy, and kindness.
We are committed to making our district a place where every person feels like they belong, a value that is equally important within the greater community. We each play a role in living up to this commitment. Let us use this difficult moment as an opportunity to reinforce our community’s dedication to those values that unite us and make us stronger.
Scott Carpenter, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Monomoy Regional School District
