December 22, 2022 — Students and educators across Monomoy Regional School District collaborate frequently with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy – a fitting partnership for the Monomoy Sharks and region’s top shark education organization. This has included special presentations to students of all ages, dissection of dogfish at the high school, and more. Most recently, fourth-grade students in the district have been learning about sharks from the AWSC’s experts, and conducting their own research projects. AWSC Education Coordinator Kristen Kibblehouse visited Chatham Elementary School fourth-grade classes a few weeks ago to lead the students through some challenges, where they were asked to identify previously tagged sharks by name, using the photos on the AWSC site and other details. The last challenge proved taxing for the students, as that final shark didn’t have a name – yet. The surprise for the students was that AWSC had recently tagged a shark, and was granting the naming rights to Chatham Elementary School! Students spent the next few weeks brainstorming potential names, and narrowing down the list to three. At the all-school Shark Assembly on Wednesday, December 21, CES students and staff voted, and the winning name was Dragon. Students and educators will now be able to monitor Dragon on the AWSC site, and learn even more about sharks through the movements and activities of their very own shark.
