Monomoy teacher Rachel Barnes honored with Award for Excellence in Civics Education

May 4, 2022 -- Monomoy Regional High School teacher Rachel Barnes has been selected as the recipient of the 2022 Don Salvucci Award for Excellence in Promoting Civics Education from the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies. The award is named in honor of Don Salvucci, past president of MCSS with a passion for civics education, and is presented annually to one educator in Massachusetts who has demonstrated exceptional ability in the field of civics education.

In the statement announcing the award, Kathleen Babini, Ed.D., Executive Director of MCSS, said, “In reading the nomination letter it was clear that your dedication and professional involvement have incorporated innovative and effective instructional strategies and techniques, and have fostered a spirit of inquiry and democratic beliefs and values.”

Barnes is being honored for her involvement with Project Citizen, having served as a mentor in the program for over 20 years.

The award will be presented at the Council’s annual Awards for Excellence in Teaching Social Studies Program on Saturday, May 14, at the Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center.
