HES students prepare Thanksgiving baskets for local veterans

HES students prepare Thanksgiving baskets for local veteransNovember 5, 2021 -- As part of an annual tradition at Harwich Elementary School, students this week participated in the assembly of Thanksgiving baskets for local veterans. Students and families donated enough food to fill 35 baskets for local veterans. Each grade level was assigned a category of food to ensure that all baskets would then include all the necessary fixings for a full Thanksgiving meal. Donations included bread/muffin mix, crackers, brownie/cake mix, stuffing, gravy, fresh cranberries, canned and fresh vegetables, cranberry sauce, potatoes, squash, and staff donated paper goods and large aluminum roasting pans. In addition, there was a coin drive throughout the week, with all the funds raised dedicated to the purchase of turkeys.

The donation of funds reached an all-time high of $620 this year, including a generous donation from S&L Tree Service of Harwich, which will be used to purchase gift cards for turkeys. Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops will be picking up baskets at HES on Friday, November 12, for distribution that weekend.

Special thanks to several people who helped make this event possible:

*Mr. Zabielski's fourth grade class in the assembling of the baskets.

*Mrs. Branchut's students for decorating unique tags and creating informative writing about Veterans Day which accompanies each basket.

*Sara Grizzle, Kelma Dever, and Pat Robbins for helping out with the wrapping of the baskets.

*Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops for the special delivery of each basket to local veterans.

Any extra donations will be shared with the Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich.
