Monomoy educators complete graduate training in trauma and learning

Monomoy educators earn graduate certificates in trauma informed learning

September 24, 2021 -- A cohort of 12 Monomoy Regional School District educators have spent the last few years taking graduate-level classes to better prepare them to support students by offering trauma-sensitive practices. These educators have successfully completed all four courses in Lesley University's graduate certificate program in Trauma and Learning, taught by Donna Desrosiers and Julieandra Morgan.

Congratulations to these Monomoy educators for their hard work and commitment: Julia Blois (HES), Kathleen Cloney (HES), Caroline Freitas (MRHS), Kathryn Giangregorio (HES), Amy Hirschberger (HES), Jennifer Jennings (HES), Amanda Julin (HES), Amanda Malone (HES), Sara Peters (MRMS), Rebecca Riley (HES), Amy Silvester (HES), and Holly Tavano (HES).

This 12-credit Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Learning, offered through Lesley's Center for Inclusive and Special Education, is designed for educators seeking to become knowledgeable about trauma and its impact on children's learning. The program focuses on examining the impact of traumatic experiences and adversity on student learning, both academic and social/emotional; identifying and implementing classroom and school-wide approaches that remove trauma as a barrier to learning; and conducting action research projects designed to improve the trauma sensitivity of schools.

“Participants work in collaboration with their colleagues to develop and implement these practices and strategies in holistic ways, taking into account relationship skills and self-regulation abilities, academic competence, and physical and emotional wellbeing,” said Desrosiers. “There’s also a focus on family engagement and building trusting home-school partnerships, designing and training professional development activities, creating action plans, and designing safe and supportive schools. It's rigorous and important work, and Monomoy should be proud of its commitment to supporting educators, students, and families.”

This is the second cohort of Monomoy educators to complete this trauma certificate program. The first cohort of 20 educators earned their certificates in 2019.
