Monomoy Regional School District names Dr. Jennifer Kelly as new principal of Chatham Elementary School
June 5, 2021 – Monomoy Regional School District has named Dr. Jennifer Kelly to be the next principal of Chatham Elementary School, following the resignation of Dr. Robin Millen, who is moving into a position in another district.
A group of teachers and staff, parents, administrators, and a community member participated in the hiring committee for this position. The initial 26 applications for the Chatham Elementary School principal position were reviewed by the MRSD Director of Curriculum for the necessary certification and documentation to arrive at 12 applicants, who were then screened by the hiring committee down to eight strong candidates who were invited for in-person interviews with the committee. From these interviews, the field was narrowed by the committee to two highly qualified finalists.
The two finalists each spent the better part of a day at Chatham Elementary School, visiting classrooms, taking questions from students, and meeting with teachers and staff. The finalists also took part in caregiver/community meetings, with both in-person and virtual options available. Following all of these sessions, there was an opportunity for students, staff, caregivers, and community members to provide feedback on the finalists. After participating in both site visits with the finalists, observing the student, staff, and caregiver/community sessions, interviewing both finalists, and speaking to references, MRSD Superintendent Dr. Scott Carpenter selected Dr. Jennifer Kelly for the position.
“Both candidate finalists were very strong and would be solid principals here or at any elementary school,” said Carpenter. “Dr. Kelly’s enthusiasm, collaboration, and background all received high marks from staff, and students appreciated her warmth and attentiveness – with many children describing her as joyful and kind. I was impressed by her ability to balance the human elements of education with experience in supporting teachers' use of assessments and data to strengthen both academic and social-emotional development.”
Kelly’s background includes experience as a humanities and language arts teacher at a range of grade levels, head of a gifted and talented program, assistant principal and math and science curriculum coordinator, and, most recently, Principal of J.W. Martin Jr. Elementary School in North Attleboro. She holds a masters degree in education and a doctorate in curriculum, teaching, and learning.
“I am confident Dr. Kelly will make an excellent addition to the Monomoy administrative team,” added Carpenter. “She will touch the hearts of the Chatham community, while also continuing to elevate how we teach and learn.”
Kelly will formally begin her new position on July 1, 2021.
