Monomoy Regional School District to embark on Equity Audit

Monomoy Regional School District to embark on Equity Audit

To support belonging and engagement throughout the district, Monomoy Regional School District will be undertaking an equity audit. The equity audit, which will solicit feedback from faculty, students, parents and caregivers, and community members on school culture and leadership, will be conducted in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC). The audit will include all of the Monomoy Regional School District schools. MAEC has worked with school districts and organizations around the country, including the Falmouth and Martha’s Vineyard schools in recent years.

The Monomoy Regional School Committee included support of a district-wide equity audit in its goals for the 2024-2025 school year.

“Monomoy holds up dignity and belonging as part of its core values,” said Monomoy Superintendent Dr. Scott Carpenter, “and we know that students who feel that they belong are better positioned for success in school and beyond. The equity audit will allow us to reflect upon the practices and structures that may be preventing some students from fully accessing learning opportunities, while at the same time supporting our staff in the important work that they do.”

The process will provide an opportunity for the school district to evaluate and celebrate areas of strength as well as identify areas of needed growth.

According to the MAEC, the equity audit “specifically looks at policies, programs and practices that directly or indirectly impact students or staff relative to their race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, color, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or other socio-culturally significant factors.”

This project will be largely funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Region 1 Equity Assistance Center, resulting in very little direct costs for the school district.

“We look forward to partnering with MAEC to engage our entire school community in ensuring that each and every student is best positioned for growth and learning,” said Carpenter.

MRSD Mission Statement: Monomoy Regional School District places students at the center of an educational partnership with caregivers and the community to create a welcoming and innovative learning environment that builds relationships, encourages curiosity, and elevates all students to achieve their full potential.
