Monomoy Regional School District awarded $197K grant to support reading instruction

Monomoy Regional School District has been awarded a grant of $197,500 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of the Partnership for Reading Success - Massachusetts (PRISM) II program, which focuses on early reading instruction. The PRISM grant program was launched to strengthen literacy instruction through curriculum and materials selection, educator professional development, and focused coaching. Monomoy is in the PRISM II cohort, with the funding positioned to support early literacy through the implementation of high-quality instructional materials in pre-kindergarten through third grade.

“Early literacy is a key component of lifelong learning and academic success,” said Monomoy Superintendent Robin Millen, Ed.D. “The PRISM II grant funding will allow us to broaden our capacity to help ensure that every Monomoy preschool student has a strong foundation in reading and writing, which will enable them to reach their full potential in all areas." 

This grant funding follows an initial award to Monomoy last year of $97K, which was used to conduct an early literacy strengths/needs assessment; develop an early literacy vision beyond the schools and into the community; and form and deepen collaborative partnerships with community-based preschool providers. That funding also allowed Monomoy to establish a multi-year plan for providing professional development for educators, as well as for community preschool providers, satisfying an explicit goal in Monomoy's Strategic Plan.

“This additional funding from the state will allow us to continue and expand upon this critical work, focusing on supporting the essential literacy skills of our youngest learners,” added Millen.

Monomoy was one of 71 school districts across the state to be awarded PRISM grant funding.
