Monomoy Regional Middle School roofing project invited into Massachusetts School Building Association’s Accelerated Repair Program

Monomoy Regional School District has been invited into the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s Accelerated Repair Program for the work to be done on the Monomoy Regional Middle School roof.

At its meeting October 30, 2024, the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts School Building Authority voted to invite Monomoy Regional School District into the Accelerated Repair Program, to partner with the MSBA in conducting a Schematic Design Study at Monomoy Regional Middle School for a potential roof replacement project. The program will focus on the preservation of existing assets by performing energy-efficient and cost-saving upgrades, which will result in direct operational savings for districts.

With the exception of some areas of the roof that were replaced in 2018 after significant storm damage, the majority of the middle school roof was last replaced in 1997. Some sections of the roof date back as far as 34 years, far past its useful lifespan. Replacement of the middle school roof is necessary in order to prevent water permeating the exterior envelope and damaging the building’s interior.

“We are pleased to be included in this round of MSBA's Accelerated Repair Program funding,” said Superintendent Scott Carpenter, Ed.D. “The invitation to join the MSBA program means that the state will cover a percentage of the cost of replacing the roof at the middle school, helping to support our taxpayers while continuing to provide a safe learning facility for our students and educators. The reimbursement rate for this project is estimated to be approximately 37%.”

This project will be done concurrently with siding and trim repairs which are also needed to seal the building envelope from the elements. The current siding was installed nearly 30 years ago, and in some areas the flashing around windows and the water barrier beneath the cedar shingles were either absent or poorly installed, which has heightened the need for the siding project to prevent further water intrusion.

“The middle school building is a great facility and this important work to repair the roof and siding will ensure many more decades of productive use,” Carpenter added.

MSBA Accelerated Repair Projects will follow a shorter, more aggressive project timeline to complete projects limited to specific scope items. While the roofing project is eligible for MSBA reimbursement, the siding project does not fall under the scope of MSBA projects eligible for reimbursement.

“We are looking for community members with expertise in construction, design, and/or financing to serve on a Building Committee for this renovation project,” said Carpenter. Those interested in serving on the Building Committee for the middle school projects should contact Dr. Carpenter at scarpenter@monomoy.edu.

The MSBA is a quasi-independent government authority created to reform the process of funding capital improvement projects in the Commonwealth’s public schools. The MSBA works with local communities to create affordable, sustainable, and energy efficient schools across Massachusetts.
