Canva
Canva is a versatile digital design platform that's both professional and easy to use. It's great for teaching students design skills that they can apply in the future. Canva works well for art, design, technology, geography, history, English, and more.
Canva is crammed full of features but many are education-specific. Before getting into that, it's worth noting that Canva auto-saves. This is a great feature both for teachers and students as it means never worrying about losing work – something Google's ecosystem of tools has got many people used to.
While the templates are fantastic to make any presentation, poster, or image have more impact, there are powerful sub-tools. The graph templates, for example, are a great way to help in math and science classes – allowing for specific results to be displayed in a clear visual and engaging way.
Canva is optimized for Chromebooks so even the most intensive image-based projects can be handled on most machines, with smooth interaction.
Guides
Canva as a Jamboard alternative!
Canva is a great alternative to Jamboard because, like Jamboard, it allows real-time collaboration and brainstorming. Both tools let students and teachers work together on digital whiteboards, but Canva offers more customizable templates and design elements. Canva also connects easily with Google Classroom and provides extra tools for creating presentations and infographics, making it a more versatile option for visual projects and interactive learning.
Canva as a Flip alternative!
Canva can be a great alternative to Flip, especially for creative projects with a focus on visual content. Canva for Education includes a built-in video recorder, allowing students to easily create videos with audio and animations. Teachers can share templates for recording or let students start from scratch. While Flip focuses on video discussions, Canva offers more flexibility by enabling collaboration on presentations, infographics, and posters. It also integrates with Google Classroom for seamless project sharing. Both tools promote student engagement and creativity.

Plan lessons
Use Canva to visually lay out the lesson for yourself as a teacher but also to share with students so they know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
Build student profiles
Have students create learning portfolios so they can see how they're progressing throughout the year -- this can also be a valuable revision and review tool.
Collaborate
With up to 10 members in a project, have groups of students work together, in class and digitally from home, to create a finished body of work.
Chart graphics
Ideal for math and science, Canva can be used to display data in rich charts and graphs to make presenting experiments, and more, visually engaging.
Plagiarism Checker
Plagiarism Checker
Originality Reports in Google Classroom help ensure academic integrity by checking student work for plagiarism. This tool compares submissions to online sources and books, highlighting flagged text for easy review. Students can run up to three reports before submitting their work, empowering them to revise and ensure originality.
Turn on originality reports when you create an assignment
- On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
- Click the class
Classroom.
- Click Create
Assignment.
- Check the Check plagiarism (originality) box.
Turn on originality reports after getting student work
If you turn on originality reports after a student submits their work, the student can't run a report until you return their work. To let students run a report, return their work and allow them to resubmit their assignment.
- On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
- Click the class
Classwork.
- Next to the assignment, click More
Edit.
- Check the Check plagiarism (originality) box.
Review an originality report
When students turn in their work, Classroom automatically runs an originality report for each submitted Docs or Slides file, visible only to you. If a student unsubmits and resubmits an assignment, Classroom runs another originality report for the teacher.
- On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
- Click the class
Classwork.
- Click the assignment
View assignment
the student’s file.
- On the right, click # flagged passages.
Embed YouTube Videos for Student Viewing
Below is a step‐by‐step guide for embedding YouTube videos into your teaching tools (Classroom, Slides, Sites, Canva and Docs). Although the direct YouTube website is disabled for students, they will still be able to view videos when they are embedded in these platforms. Follow the steps below to integrate video content seamlessly into your lessons.
1. Embedding YouTube Videos in Google Classroom
Even though students cannot access YouTube directly, embedded videos in Classroom posts remain viewable.
Steps:
-
Open Your Class:
Sign in to Google Classroom and select the class where you want to add the video. -
Create a New Post or Assignment:
Click on the Classwork tab and then click Create. Choose Assignment, Material, or another post type. -
Add a YouTube Video:
In the post editor, click the + (Add) button and select YouTube. -
Find Your Video:
Search: Use keywords to find the video.
Paste URL: Alternatively, paste the full YouTube URL in the search field. -
Select and Attach:
Click on the desired video and then press Add. The video will appear as an embedded item in your post. -
Publish:
Add any additional instructions, then click Assign or Post to share the content with your students.
2. Embedding YouTube Videos in Google Slides
Students can watch the embedded videos in your presentations even if the YouTube site is disabled for direct access.
Steps:
-
Open Your Presentation:
Go to Google Slides and open the presentation where you want the video to appear. -
Select a Slide:
Click on the slide where you’d like the video to be inserted. -
Insert the Video:
Click on Insert in the menu, then select Video. -
Find Your Video:
Search: Use keywords to find the video.
Paste URL: Alternatively, paste the full YouTube URL in the search field. -
Insert and Adjust:
Once the video appears, click Select. You can then drag and resize the video frame to best fit your slide. -
Test the Video:
Enter presentation mode and click the video to ensure it plays properly.
3. Embedding YouTube Videos in Google Sites
Embedded YouTube videos on Google Sites will work for students, even if they cannot access YouTube directly.
Steps:
-
Open Your Site:
Go to Google Sites and open the site you’re editing (or create a new one). -
Access the Insertion Panel:
On the right-hand side, click the Insert tab. -
Add the Video:
Click on the YouTube option. -
Find Your Video:
Search: Use keywords to find the video.
Paste URL: Alternatively, paste the full YouTube URL in the search field. -
Embed and Configure:
Click Select to insert the video. You can then reposition or resize the video as needed. -
Publish:
Click Publish to update your site with the embedded video.
4. “Embedding” YouTube Videos in Google Docs
Note: This method is less than ideal since students must hover, click to open a preview, and manually activate full-screen mode—extra steps that may disrupt their learning experience.
Since Google Docs cannot play videos directly within the document, follow these steps so students can view a YouTube video via its interactive preview:
Steps:
-
Insert the YouTube Link:
Copy the full YouTube URL of the video you want to share.
Paste it into your Google Doc. The link will automatically become clickable. -
Hover to Preview:
When students place their cursor over the link, a small interactive preview window will appear, showing the video’s thumbnail and a brief description. -
Open the Video Preview:
Instruct students to click on the preview window. This action opens the video preview within the document interface. -
Activate Full-Screen Mode:
Once the video preview is open, students can click the full-screen icon (a square icon) located at the bottom right of the preview.
Clicking this icon will enlarge the video to full screen, making it easier to watch. -
Return to the Document:
After viewing, students can exit full-screen mode and return to reading the document.
5. Embedding YouTube Videos in Canva
To embed a YouTube video in Canva, follow these steps:
-
Open Your Canva Design:
Log in to Canva and open the design where you want to add the YouTube video or create a new one. -
Go to the "Apps" Section:
On the left sidebar, click on the Apps button (square with a dot inside). -
Select "YouTube":
In the Apps search bar, type "YouTube" and select the YouTube app. -
Search for the YouTube Video:
Once the YouTube app is open, use the search bar to find the video you want to embed.
You can also paste the YouTube video link if you have it copied. -
Add the Video to Your Design:
Once you find the video, click on it to add it to your design.
The video will appear directly on your canvas, where you can resize, move, and adjust it. -
Preview the Video:
To see how it looks, click the play button to preview the video in your design. -
Share:
If you're satisfied with the placement, you can share it directly online.- Note that embedded YouTube videos will only be viewable online and not in downloaded versions of the design.
