Equity Needs Assessment

Overview

To support belonging and engagement throughout the district, Monomoy Regional School District has been undertaking an equity audit in 2025 and 2026 to better gauge where we are successful in those goals and where we have room for improvement. The Monomoy Regional School Committee had included support of a district-wide equity audit in its goals for the 2024-2025 school year. 

The equity audit solicited feedback from faculty, students, parents and caregivers, and community members on school culture and leadership and was conducted in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC) through the Center for Education Equity (CEE), the Region 1 Equity Assistance Center. The audit included all of the Monomoy Regional School District schools. MAEC, which has collaborated with school districts and organizations nationwide – including Falmouth Public Schools and Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools in recent years – brings extensive experience to support Monomoy Regional School District in this equity audit. This project was largely funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Region 1 Equity Assistance Center, resulting in very little direct costs for the school district. 

Results

The MAEC equity audit noted a number of areas to celebrate, as well as opportunities for growth. To review detailed district-level results, explore the story map on our website.

In general, students, families, and staff report strong academic expectations and supportive learning environments and describe our schools as respectful, inclusive, and welcoming. In addition, schools self-identified as consistently training educators to use varied instructional approaches to meet different learning needs, and addressing critical educational issues in ways that do not stereotype or stigmatize particular groups

Noted opportunities for growth include stronger support for engaging all learners, deeper inclusive and culturally responsive academic systems, and stronger consistency of discipline and restorative practices.

MAEC prepared a variety of materials to help share this information in accessible and understandable formats.

Next steps

Monomoy administrators and educators have identified next steps to address in the coming school year to better support all learners in our community. 

District level

Supports for all learners: District will prioritize Universal Design for Learning (UDL), starting with purposeful planning to provide access for all students
Family and community engagement: Support consistent implementation of classroom and school-level family engagement practices

Chatham Elementary School

Strengthen SEL programming: Expand weekly whole-class emotional literacy and increase peer-relationships in small groups
Mobilize stakeholder engagement: Proactively recruit staff and community members for School Council and PTO leadership

Harwich Elementary School

Student safety: Improve education on bullying definitions and protocols
Family and community engagement: Identify ways to include all stakeholders in school policies and practices

Monomoy Regional Middle School

School culture: Dig deeper into student perceptions of attitude and culture through advisory discussions and continuing to analyze the survey data to better understand trends and identify areas for growth

Monomoy Regional High School

Family engagement: Establish a frequent communication protocol between home and school
School culture: Audit the many school clubs and activities offered for inclusivity
