Portrait of a Graduate

  • Portrait of a Graduate

  • Our world ‒ and the future we are preparing students for ‒ is changing at an exponential rate. In such a rapidly changing world, is what we teach, how we teach, and what we assess students on today best preparing our graduates for their futures tomorrow? Our Portrait of a Graduate process will help answer that question, and in doing so, better prepare all Monomoy students for the future.

  • Update

Many thanks to all who participated in the initial information-gathering phase for our Portrait of a Graduate endeavor. The feedback provided in the focus groups and in the survey will guide the process moving forward. The next phase of the project will have the Development Team meeting regularly to review the feedback and other school data. This team is made up of parents and caregivers, students, faculty and staff, administrators, School Committee members, and community members, and meetings will be facilitated by outside consultants. The group will meet frequently over the next few months in order to create a Portrait of the Graduate to present to the School Committee in February, with the final version published in March. We are excited for the conversations that this process ignites, and look forward to seeing the results.

  • What do our students need to know and be able to do by the time they graduate high school?

Monomoy Regional School District is embarking on the process of creating a Portrait of a Graduate during the 2022-2023 school year. A Portrait of a Graduate can serve as a north star to drive transformation of traditional school models. Developing a Portrait of a Graduate pushes educators to articulate the full range of outcomes they want for their graduates, and work backwards from there to build a school model in which each element maps directly to the identified outcomes. This collective vision reengages and reinvigorates students, families, faculty, and community stakeholders.

The creation of a Portrait of a Graduate for our district will help inform educators from preschool through Grade 12 on the skills, mindsets, and attributes they hope to develop in each and every student.

    Process

The MRSD Portrait of a Graduate Development Team consists of Monomoy administrators and School Committee members, as well as consultants from the Teaching and Learning Alliance. The School Committee elected to use the services of a consultant in order to provide experienced structure and an impartial third-party perspective throughout this in-depth process.

The consultants will guide the Development Team to solicit input from a variety of stakeholders in our school community, review and analyze district data and feedback, and draft areas of focus for the Portrait of a Graduate. The Development Team will then create the final Portrait of a Graduate and present that to the School Committee. The timeline calls for the final version of the district’s Portrait of a Graduate to be completed by March 2023.

    Survey

The Development Team will be releasing a survey to allow stakeholders to share their input. The survey will go live October 7, 2022, and will be open until October 21, 2022. All members of our school community are encouraged to participate.

    Focus Groups

In addition, the team will hold a number of in-person focus groups for staff, administrators, students, parents, and community stakeholders. All focus groups will be held in the MHRS Library unless otherwise noted, and snacks and beverages will be provided.
