Sixth Grade General Music Students: We will be studying music as a multifaceted art form that is a foundation of our civil culture. The students will choose between four separate areas of study and all students will be working at their own level and pace. Music is not an even playing field...some students possess higher prior knowledge than others, and because of that, each musician will simply be asked to advance his or her level of understanding in each of his or her chosen areas. The music room is an open classroom, allowing for the freedom necessary to instill a love of learning. All students will be expected to review / advance their knowledge base for ten minutes each night.
Seventh Grade Theatre of Social Issues Students: This new standards-based course, open just to seventh graders, replaces their general music curricula. The course uses theatre as a means to inspire self-reflection and to explore current events and issues. As a first step, students will use “IMPROVISATION” to help them find their voices and become comfortable in expressing themselves. With this skill, they will then begin studying the art of “CHARACTERIZATION.” Students will ACTIVELY participate in the “WHO-WHAT-WHEN-WHERE-WHY-HOW” process taught by the great Russian actor, Konstantin Stanislavski. These newly acquired skills of observation will encourage a better understanding of the world around them. This depth of awareness will lead them to a stronger and more committed sense of perspective in their own thoughts and beliefs, as well as in the thoughts and beliefs of others. Finally, students will support each other in learning and practicing how to “use their voices for positive change,” by developing short plays and/or performances around current events and students’ day-to-day experiences. EACH NIGHT, THE STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO WRITE IN THEIR JOURNALS, FOLLOWING A REFLECTION ON THE DAY'S ACTIVITIES.

Skills: Students sing in three or four part harmony in a variety of styles, languages. Students work on rudiments of music through study of the sheet music performed.
Assessment: Students are assessed alone and in groups to determine prowess in melody, rhythm, lyrics and dynamics. Students perform in two school concerts. Some students perform in All Cape and Islands Workshop. Some students participate in Jr. Southeast District Festival.
