Monomoy Regional School District Family/Caregiver Outreach and Involvement

I. Vision and Goals

A. Vision Statement

Monomoy Regional School District is committed to fostering a strong, collaborative partnership between the school, the home, and the community. We recognize that caregivers and families are the first and most important teachers of their children and that their involvement is crucial for academic success, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.

B. Goals

The goals of this procedure are to:

  • Ensure two-way communication between the school and home that is frequent, accessible, and understandable.
  • Provide caregivers and families with the necessary resources and skills to support their child's learning at home and at school.
  • Involve caregivers in the planning, review, and improvement of school programs and of the Caregiver and Family Engagement Procedure.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable school environment that values and incorporates the diverse cultures and perspectives of all families.
  • Strengthen the home-school connection to support student achievement and positive behavioral outcomes.

II. Implementation Strategies

Monomoy Regional School District will implement this vision and goals through the following strategies:

A. Communication

  • Information Sharing: The schools will provide caregivers with timely information about curriculum, academic assessments, and expected proficiency levels in an easy-to-read format.
  • Accessibility: All communication will be provided in a language and format that caregivers can understand, to the extent practicable.
  • Regular Updates: Utilize multiple communication methods (e.g., email, school website, newsletters, social media, and translation services) to share information about school activities, student progress, and opportunities for involvement.
  • Two-Way Dialogue: Establish scheduled opportunities for caregiver-teacher conferences (at least annually), open houses, and informal meetings to encourage a meaningful exchange of information.

B. Support for Student Learning

  • Academic Support: Offer workshops, resources, or materials to help caregivers understand the curriculum and monitor their child’s progress, including training on using school technology platforms to track grades and assignments.
  • Home Learning: Work with caregivers to understand how to assist with homework and reinforce learning skills at home.
  • Transition Support: Provide information and support to help students and families successfully transition between grade levels and schools (e.g., elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, post graduation).

C. Shared Decision-Making and Capacity Building

  • Procedure Development: Involve caregivers in an organized, ongoing, and timely way in the development and annual review of the school's Caregiver and Family Engagement Procedures and the School-Caregiver Compact.
  • Advisory Roles: Establish and support caregiver advisory groups, such as the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) or School Council, to provide input on school governance and improvement plans.
  • Training and Resources: Provide materials and training to help caregivers work with educators to improve their children's instruction, including topics such as positive discipline, understanding student data, and advocating for their child.
  • Staff Training: Educate teachers, staff, and administrators on the value and utility of caregivers' contributions, and how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with caregivers as equal partners.

III. School-Caregiver Compact

Each school will develop a School-Caregiver Compact outlining the shared responsibility for improving student academic achievement. This compact will detail:

  • The school's responsibility is to provide a high-quality curriculum and instruction.
  • The ways in which caregivers will support their child's learning.
  • The importance of ongoing communication between teachers and caregivers.
  • The Compact will be jointly developed with caregivers and distributed annually.

IV. Annual Review and Evaluation

This Caregiver and Family Engagement Procedures will be evaluated annually, with caregiver involvement. The district will:

  • Collect caregiver feedback through surveys, focus groups, and meetings.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of the procedure in achieving its goals.
  • Identify barriers to participation, particularly for caregivers who are economically disadvantaged, have disabilities, have limited English proficiency, or are of a racial or ethnic minority.
  • Use the evaluation findings to revise the procedure as necessary.
