Positive Case Notification Procedures

  • When MRSD is notified of a positive COVID-19 test result among our students or staff members, the following steps are taken:

    Close contact identification and notification:

    1. The CDC defines an individual’s close contacts as “Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.” The period of infectiousness is measured from 2 days before the onset of symptoms. MRSD will work with our staff or students and their families to identify close contacts. The district may identify some as close contacts who may have been beyond 6 feet, yet in the vicinity of the positive individual, for a prolonged period.
      • This group is asked to quarantine for 14 days from the date of possible exposure and is advised to take a COVID-19 test.
      • Local boards of health and VNA contact tracers will be notified of these school-identified close contacts.
    2. Additional individuals who may not be close contacts but who shared a classroom/physical space with the positive individual are identified.
      • This group is asked to quarantine for 14 days from the date of possible exposure; COVID testing should be discussed with their medical provider.
    3. Both groups receive a phone call to notify them of the need for quarantine and possible testing, and receive an email as follow-up.
    4. District staff and families receive an email notification with general information.
    5. District facilities staff and the bus company are notified to provide added cleaning and sanitization, beyond that done each day, of areas of the building and, if applicable, the bus ridden by the individual who tested positive.

If you are asked to get tested: We strongly encourage you to have your child tested for COVID-19 using a PCR test (not a rapid test) and to report the results to your school nurse, even if negative. Even if the results are negative, your child must remain in quarantine for the full 14 days. We would recommend that you contact your family physician to schedule the testing. You can also find a map of testing sites in Massachusetts here.

If you are asked to quarantine: People in quarantine should stay home, separate themselves from others, monitor their health, and follow directions from their doctor or our school nurses. Please closely monitor your child for any symptoms and contact the school nurse if any symptoms arise. See below for additional guidance on quarantining. Remote learning while quarantined: We will be providing remote learning for all students required to quarantine at home to continue to provide instruction, structure, and an emotional connection to the classroom during a time that we know will be challenging for the children and families involved. Additional details about the remote learning process for students in quarantine will follow directly from the school and teacher.

Siblings/family members: Unless your child’s siblings were also identified as close contacts with the positive individual, as long as all members of the household are without symptoms of illness, siblings are allowed to continue with in-person learning. Our approach follows CDC and DPH protocols and is designed to keep everyone in our community safe, as opposed to assuming that they have contracted the virus.

Cleaning: All MRSD facilities are cleaned and sanitized throughout the day, with a special deep cleaning via disinfectant fogger each evening. With each notification of a positive COVID-19 case, the District’s Director of Facilities mobilizes additional cleaning and sanitization of areas of the school building frequented by the individual testing positive, and if applicable, the bus company does the same on any impacted bus.
