A message from Supt. Carpenter on change to school start times
Dear Parents and Staff,
Last spring the Monomoy Regional School Committee was presented a research-based recommendation from me to “flip” our current school start times, a move which would begin the elementary schools prior to the middle and high school. Research would support that such a shift in start times would improve learning for children of all ages and have many health benefits for teens. After much public debate, and gathering input from parents, staff, and students, the School Committee voted to implement this recommendation beginning September 2017.
At the Jan. 26 School Committee meeting, I shared with the Committee the projected start and end times for our schools beginning this coming September (2017).
Beginning in September, Monomoy’s Elementary Schools will run from 7:45 A.M. to 2:15 P.M. and the Middle School and High Schools will run from 8:45 A.M. to 3:15 P.M. With these new start times, three (of our 14) elementary buses are projected to start picking up students just before 7 A.M. It was decided at the School Committee meeting that if the bus routing times allow, the elementary start time would shift forward a few minutes, and we will strive to have no riders picked up before 7 A.M. The middle school and high school start times of 8:45 A.M. will not move.

I do understand that this shift in start times will impact families differently. Some may find them more convenient. Other may find aspects of the change presenting new challenges. Please begin making preparations for this change which will go into effect in September.
Scott Carpenter, Superintendent
